What is Botox?

Botox® is a procedure using Botulinum Toxin which was developed for both cosmetic and therapeutic treatments. Therapeutic uses include the treatment of migraine headaches along with TMJ pain and related jaw discomfort. Cosmetic uses reduce the visual signs of aging by reducing or removing wrinkles. The procedure is considered a safe, effective way of treating aging skin. Common areas for Botox® injections include horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. Botox® has proven to be the best non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation and is capable of producing phenomenal improvements in your appearance.

How We Do It.

The procedure works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles. A cream with local anesthetic will be placed on your skin prior to treatment. Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) of Botox® is injected into the area of the wrinkle. Botox® works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them. The result is the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. The effects of a Botox® treatment will last approximately three to six months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

Before Botox injections, a brief consult between you and the doctor will take place to go over your general areas of concerns and the total number of units needed. Touch-ups may be needed if it is the your first time using Botox. Every patient takes a different total number of units.

Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period.

Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of four hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area/material toward the eyeball area. Massage from the eye outward.

We also offer Juvederm.

Juvederm is a cosmetic treatment used to restore facial contours. Treatment is usually specifically used on the cheeks, lips and around the mouth. This is an injectable treatment with very little touch-up times. People usually come back every 6 to 12 months for more injections.

Unlike Botox, Juvederm is dosed out by a syringe. Many people get Juvederm for their lips to create a more plump, fuller look, also known as filler.

A general consult will be needed to determine the areas of concern. During the day of injection, a lidocaine cream will be placed over the areas of concern to help numb. We will then inject the Juvederm into the proper places.

Instructions will be given at the end of the appointment to ensure the best result.
